Joint Commission Defines a “Fall Event”

The Joint Commission is announcing that, effective January 2, 2021, the accreditation agency will include their definition for “fall events” within their Sentinel Event Policy. According to TJC, the intention of this inclusion is to assist staff in all health care settings understand if a fall should be considered a sentinel event.

The TJC definition is as follows: 

“Fall event – Fall resulting in any of the following: any fracture; surgery, casting, or traction; required consult/managemen
