CMS Guidance for MBI Changes

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued guidance for Medicare beneficiaries or their authorized representatives who might need to change their Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs); for example, if the MBI is compromised.  CMS is reminding provides that:

  • It is possible for patients to seek care before getting a new card with the new MBI. 
  • If an eligibility transaction error code (AAA 72) of “invalid member ID,” is received, a patient’s MBI may have changed.
