New Joint Commission Sentinel Event Raises Awareness about Diagnostic Overshadowing

The Joint Commission (TJC) has published Sentinel Event 65, addressing the patient safety issue of diagnostic overshadowing among groups experiencing health disparities. TJC defines diagnostic overshadowing as “the attribution of symptoms to an existing diagnosis rather than a potential co-morbid condition.”

According to TJC, there are multiple factors that contribute to the need for addressing diagnostic overshadowing:
