The Joint Commission (TJC) Sentinel Event Alert 68 addresses surgical fire prevention and updates recommendations and resources to reflect current best practices in surgical fire prevention.

According to TJC, surgical fires, which are most often associated with the use of an electrosurgical device while performing head and neck surgery, can be prevented through awareness and monitoring of the fire triangle: oxygen, ignition sources and fuel.
