The Joint Commission has announced a revision to the definition of suicide for the purposes of their Sentinel Event Policy, effective January 1, 2024.
According to TJC, the original definition is over 10 years old and no longer reflects data and evidence-based literature for certain elements of the definition, specifically around time-frames. The original definition was focused on inpatient settings and 24-hour staffing environments and suicides within 72 hours of discharge.
