Joint Commission Revises Terminology in Behavioral Health Program

The Joint Commission recently announced the revision of two terms within their Behavioral Health Care and Human Services (BHS) program to align with the terms being used within the field of addiction medicine.

Revised terms:

  • “Medications for substance use disorders” will now be used instead of “medication-assisted treatment.” When more specificity is required, the terms will be “medications for opioid use disorder” or “medications for alcohol use disorder.”
  • The terms “withdrawal
